2.5.4   Masih belum dapat diperbetulkan sewaktu Reformasi Agama

I.  Tercatat dalam Confession of Swiss Church bahawa tidak dapat mencarikan perintah memegang Hari Tuhan di dalam Alkitab.

The observance of the Lord’s day is found not on any commandment of God, but on the authority of the church, and, that the church may alter the day at pleasure.

II.

(Augsburg confession which was drawn up by Melancton {and approved by Luther}, to question, what ought we to think of the Lord’s day? It is answered that the Lord’s day, Easter, Whitsuntide, and other such holy days, ought to be kept because they are appointed by the church. [1]

III.

that it was lawful on the Lord’s day, after divine service, for any man to pursue his labor.

IV.  Beza juga mempunyai pemikiran yang sama:

no cessation of work on the Lord’s day is required of Christians.

As for the Sabbath, we be lords over the Sabbath, and may yet change it into Monday, or into any other day as we see need. [2]

VI.  Calvin mengatakan bahawa Hari Tuhan dipegang mengikut kebiasaan gereja:

the ancients have not without sufficient reason substituted what we call the Lord’s day in the room of Sabbath.…because that day was more fit for an assembly, according to custom [3]

VII.  White, uskup Ely menunjukkan bahawa teman sekerja Luther, Carlstadt (1480-1541) memiliki ciri-ciri pemegang Hari Sabat (Sabbath-keepers), akibatnya dianggap sebagai ajaran sesat:

The same [the observance of the seventh day] likewise being received in Luther’s time by Carlastadius, Sternebeergius, and by some sectaries among Anabaptists, hath both there and ever since been censured as Jewish and heretical. [4]

VIII.  Sears juga mengatakan bahawa Carlstadt memegang Hari Sabat. Luther pula menganggap boleh memegang mana-mana hari. Kedua-duanya mempunyai pandangan berlainan terhadap Hari Sabat:

Carlstadt held to the divine authority of the Sabbath from Old Testament; Luther believed Christians were free to observe any day as a Sabbath, provided they be uniform in observing it.  [5]

Indeed, if Carlstadt were to write further about Sabbath, Sunday would have to give way, and the Sabbath—that is to say, Saturday –must kept holy; he would truly make us Jews in all things. [6]

IX. Namun Presbyterian Kirk (Scotland) mempunyai pandangan berbeza berkenaan Hari Sabat:

The Presbyterian Kirk introduced into Scotland the Judaical observance of the Sabbath {Sunday}, retaining with some inconsistency the Sunday festival of the Catholic church. [7]

Mereka mengubah ajaran Tuhan mengikut kesukaan manusia.
